Bengali ↔ English translation

Human translators, native in the target language, with a second linguist checking every file. For documents that have to be accepted by someone — an examiner, a court, a journal, an immigration office.

Two manuscript pages joined by an arch, one carrying flowing Bengali-style strokes and the other Latin text lines, with a verification seal between them

Why machine output fails these documents

Automatic translation between Bengali and English is fluent enough to be dangerous. It reads well and goes wrong in exactly the places that carry legal or scholarly weight: a clause that reverses obligation, an honorific rendered as a name, a Bengali calendar date silently converted wrongly, a technical term given its everyday sense, a passive construction that loses who did what.

A reader who does not know the source language cannot see any of it. That is why every translation here is produced by a human translator and then read in full against the source by a second linguist before it is delivered.

Our two-linguist process

  1. Terminology first. For anything technical we agree a short bilingual term list with you before translation begins.
  2. Translation. By a translator who is a native speaker of the target language and works in your subject area.
  3. Revision. A second linguist compares the translation against the source sentence by sentence, checking accuracy, omission, numbers, names and dates.
  4. Final read. The revised text is read once more as a document in its own language, so it does not read like a translation.

Certified translation

Many authorities will not accept a translation unless it comes with a statement of accuracy. We issue a signed certificate of translation accuracy on ProofreadLab letterhead, naming the document, the languages, the date and the translator, and stating that the translation is complete and accurate to the best of our knowledge.

This is accepted by most universities, journals, employers and government offices. Requirements differ by country and by office, so tell us in your order notes which authority the document is for and we will match the wording to what they ask for.

Before you order: check whether your authority requires a sworn or notarised translation, or one from a translator registered in a particular jurisdiction. Those are legal formalities that vary by country. We will tell you honestly if what you need is outside what we can issue.

Formatting of official documents

Certificates, transcripts and legal documents are returned laid out to mirror the original: the same sections in the same order, seals and stamps described in square brackets where they appear, and anything illegible marked as such rather than guessed.

Common questions

How do you count words for translation?

On the source text, so the price is fixed before work starts and does not change because the target language came out longer. For scanned or image documents we count the extracted text and confirm the figure with you before beginning.

My document is a scan or a photograph. Is that a problem?

No, as long as it is legible. Send the clearest image you have. Anything genuinely illegible is marked [illegible] in the translation rather than guessed, and we tell you where those places are so you can supply a better copy if it matters.

Can you keep the original layout?

Yes for ordinary documents: we mirror the structure, tables and section order. Rebuilding a complex designed layout — a brochure, a form with fixed fields — is separate formatting work, charged by the hour.

Do you do back-translation for ethics approval?

Yes. An independent translator, who has not seen the English original, translates the Bengali version back into English so your ethics committee can compare. It is quoted as a separate short project.

Who owns the translation?

You do, on payment. We keep no rights over the translated text, we do not reuse your content, and we do not add it to any training corpus or translation memory shared with other clients.

Send one page. We will translate it free.

For projects over 3,000 words we translate a single page first, at no cost, so you can check the terminology and register before committing to the whole document.
